Subaru Meaning: What the Word Actually Means

Subaru is a real Japanese word — not a made-up brand name — and it carries a meaning that actually explains the car company, the logo, and even why the word keeps showing up in memes.

At its core, Subaru (昴) means “to gather together” or “unite.” It’s also the traditional Japanese name for the Pleiades, a famous star cluster visible in the night sky. Both meanings — unity and stars — point to the same idea: many separate things coming together as one.

The Japanese Subaru Meaning

The Japanese word Subaru comes from a verb meaning to govern or bring things together. When ancient Japanese skywatchers looked at the Pleiades — that tight group of blue-white stars in the constellation Taurus — they called it Subaru because the stars appeared clustered, gathered into one place.

The kanji character 昴 reflects both brightness and unity. This isn’t a modern invention either. Classical Japanese texts from over a thousand years ago mention Subaru as one of the beautiful stars in the sky, which means the word was already rich with meaning long before anyone built a car around it.

So the name is doing two things at once: it describes a concept (unity) and names a real astronomical object (the Pleiades).

Why the Subaru Logo Has Six Stars

The Subaru badge makes complete sense once you know the background.

In 1953, five smaller Japanese companies merged to form Fuji Heavy Industries, the company that eventually became Subaru. The logo was designed to reflect that moment — one large star representing the parent company, surrounded by five smaller stars for the five companies that joined together.

Six stars total. Which also happens to match how most people see the Pleiades with the naked eye. The cluster is often called the Seven Sisters, but two of those stars tend to blur together, so the average person spots six distinct points of light.

The name, the logo, and the origin story all connect back to the same idea: separate things uniting into one.

What Subaru Meaning in Other Languages

In Polish, Subaru doesn’t carry any separate meaning. It’s simply the car brand, recognized as a foreign proper noun. Polish speakers use it the same way English speakers do — as the name of a Japanese automaker.

In Chinese, the connection runs deeper. The same character, 昴 (pronounced Mǎo in Mandarin), refers to the same star cluster in traditional Chinese astronomy. It appears in classical Chinese star lore as part of a lunar mansion — a section of the sky used to track celestial movement. The concept of bright stars gathered together carries across both languages through that shared character.

Subaru TikTok and Meme Meaning

This is where things take a sharp left turn.

On TikTok and in certain online spaces, “Subaru” has picked up a slang meaning that has nothing to do with cars or stars. It’s used as a kind of compliment — calling someone cute in a goofy, slightly chaotic way. Saying someone is “such a Subaru” suggests they’re lovable but a little all over the place. Endearing, not polished.

Part of this energy probably comes from Subaru Natsuki, a character from the anime Re:Zero who’s known for being dramatic, sincere, and perpetually suffering — but in a way that makes people root for him.

Then there’s the Patrick Star meme.

In 2021, someone left a comment on the SpongeBob SquarePants fandom wiki casually referring to Patrick Star as “Subaru,” as if everyone already knew that. No explanation. No context. Just dropped in there.

Years later, that comment resurfaced and took off on TikTok. Creators started calling Patrick “Subaru” in edits and videos, and the phrase “I call Patrick Subaru” spread as a piece of pure internet absurdism. It stuck precisely because it makes no sense. There’s no official SpongeBob lore connecting Patrick to the name — it’s a random comment that became a running joke because of how confidently strange it was.

If you’ve seen “Subaru meaning SpongeBob” trending, that’s the whole story.

The Short Version

Subaru means “unity” and “the Pleiades star cluster” in Japanese. The car company chose that name after a merger of five companies, and the logo’s six stars reflect both that corporate history and the actual night sky. In online culture, the word has taken on a second life as slang for a cute-but-chaotic vibe, and as the inexplicable nickname for a cartoon starfish.

Same word. Very different contexts.
